Open goals (e.g. to “see how many steps you can reach today”) may be a promising strategy for promoting physical activity. This study from the June issue of Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport (RQES) examined the feasibility of using open goals in a 10-week step-based physical activity program. Quantitative methods assessed physical activity, enjoyment and self-efficacy, while qualitative methods explored participants’ perceptions of open goals.

The findings suggest that combining exercise with time in nature may offer unique benefits for brain function — benefits that neither exercise nor outdoor exposure alone can fully explain.
