While nutrition units in health education can support the acquisition of critical functional knowledge and the development of important skills, there is also the potential to perpetuate beliefs, ideas and norms that can lead to disordered eating, the development of unhealthy relationships with food, or shaming of self and others. Project ACES (All Children Exercise Simultaneously) takes place on the first Wednesday in May as part of National PE & Sport Week and National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. It’s an opportunity to highlight your PE program and exercise with millions of kids around the world. The 37th annual global event will occur at 10 a.m. local time on Wednesday, May 7.

I’ve had the honor of working with two elementary schools to set up classroom community circles. The benefits of classroom community circles are well documented. I’ve seen how they help build relationships and create a positive classroom environment, as well as support the development of communication skills. The teachers loved facilitating the classroom circles to start and end the day with their students.

With its students living in close proximity, Silver Lane Elementary School does not have its own bus routes, leaving students with the option of walking or being driven each morning. But a new initiative is giving students another way to get to school — by pedaling. Physical education teacher Leigha Knapp said she came up with the idea after seeing a video online from Bike Bus World.
