This study from the September issue of Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport () explores associations between intrinsic motivation for physical activity, exercise attitudes, and physical activity and mental health in young adolescents. Youth sports are considered just a physical outlet for kids. What we’re overlooking is the depth of learning and development happening there. With over half of our students participating in sports each year, we have the opportunity to treat their involvement as more than just an add-on. Instead, what if educators and parents viewed sports as another environment where real learning can take place?

I lead the Family Partnerships Department for a district with 56 schools. One of the most common complaints I hear from teachers and school leaders is, “We invited all of the families to school events, but most of them didn’t attend,” with turnout particularly low from the school’s underrepresented communities. To increase attendance at school events, teachers and administrators should think creatively about their messaging.
